31. Sep. 12, 2014: Prof. Jan Lauwereyns, from Graduate School of Systems Life Sciences Faculty of Arts and Science Kyushu University, visited the institute and delivered an academic report. It is well known that hippocampus is involved in short memory. But how does this region integrate stored information with external information to guide animals' behavior? In his talk, Dr. Lauwereyns showed that in CA1 area, high gamma oscillation was observed first, then the oscillation shifted to low gamma band. This shift is correlated to behavioral performance.

32. Dec. 5, 2014: Prof. Masamichi Sakagami, from Brain Science Institute, Tamagawa University, delivered the report. In his talk, he first introduced functional roles of dopamine neurons in reinforcement learning theory. Dopamine neurons encode the reward prediction errors that would be as a teaching signal. He showed his recent results to demonstrate that dopamine neurons also encode reward and cost, representing a relative value.
